The Begijnhof in Amsterdam – the oldest court yard in the city. It is not clear when exactly the court yard was built but it is dating back to the Middle Ages. BegijnĀ meansĀ Beguines who are a religious order. The beguines lived in the houses around the court yard. Although the houses have been modernised, many old features have been preserved and the oldest house in Amsterdam is built on this court yard.
Entering the Begijnhof feels almost like entering a different world, the atmosphere in the courtyard is very tranquil.
