IIt’s been a while since I visited Castelo de Palmela or Palmela Castle. To be a bit more precise, it was in August 2009.
Back than I was travelling a lot on my own, staying in hostels, B&Bs and cheap hotels. Not particularly posh holidays but I saw a lot, got to know many other travellers, the locals and their way of living.
Palmela is a city just south of Lisbon. What is known as the castle today was originally a fortress that was conquered by the Portuguese in the 12th century. The settlement of Palmela is believed to be a lot older and might date back as far as 310 BC. The castle is open every day and there is no entrance fee (please check for updates before visiting). It is full of history and offers a great view from the top of the hill over the land to the coast.
An easy to arrange and cheap day out for history lovers, families or individuals like me. There is not much that can go wrong. Just go, do it and enjoy!
